DAD THE F*CK UP

How Do I Connect With My Teenage Son When He Pulls Away?

The pull-back years arrive on schedule and they are not personal, which are the two facts that keep a dad sane through them. A teenage son withdrawing is doing developmental work, not delivering a verdict. The dads who stay connected through it stop demanding the old channels and learn the teen codes: sideways beats face-to-face, the car outranks the kitchen table, and the door stays open even when his does not.

The pull-back is the program, not a problem

Little kids train dads on demand: constant requests, constant access. Teenagers cancel the subscription without notice, and dads read it as rejection when it is separation, the thing adolescence is for. Take it personally and you chase or sulk, both of which extend it. Expect it and you can hold position calmly, which shortens it.

The car is still the confessional

Something about shoulder-to-shoulder, eyes on the road, no exit for either party, makes the car the last reliable talking venue of the teen years. Never waste it on interrogation. Drive, say little, let silence do the pulling. The school runs and practice pickups you claimed in the little-kid years pay out here, which is a reason to claim them now if you have not.

Sideways, not head-on

Direct questions get one-word answers because they are experienced as audits. Teenagers talk while doing something else: driving, shooting baskets, washing a car. Be findable during activities and the talking arrives on its own clock. The listening half of this is covered in how to listen to your teenager.

The door stays open when his does not

The message that survives the whole stretch is availability without pressure: I am here, the offer stands, no invoice attached. Rejected invitations still register; they are being counted even when declined. Keep issuing them at a sustainable rate and keep the reaction to rejection boring. If his world right now is the internet's worst neighborhoods, the slang guide and what safe self-improvement looks like for him are the companion reads.

365 days of showing up like the father they'll brag about. One page a day, one Dad Mission, funny enough to survive the diaper years.

Why is my teenage son distant with me?

Because separation is the developmental job of adolescence, not because of a verdict on you. It is scheduled, general, and temporary. Distance handled calmly tends to shorten; distance chased or punished tends to extend.

How do I talk to my teenage son who won't talk?

Stop asking head-on questions and be present during activities: driving, sport, errands. Teenagers talk sideways, mid-task, on their own timing. Your job is to be reliably findable when the moment lands.
