SHUT THE F*CK UP
How Do I Get My Teenager to Talk to Me? Ask, Then Shut Up
Teenagers talk when the adult stops filling the silence. Ask one open question, no lecture attached, then hold the two-second pause and then hold it again. Most parents lose the conversation in the gap where they jump in to help. Shut The F*ck Up devotes a run of days to exactly this: the questions that open teenagers, the pause that keeps them open, and the reflex to fix that closes them.
The pause is where they decide
After a teenager answers, there is a gap. In that gap they are deciding whether to keep going. If a parent speaks into it, the decision is made for them: no. Two seconds of silence, twice, is where the second sentence lives.

Ask smaller
Big questions get shrugs. How was school is unanswerable. Who was annoying today has an answer, and the answer leads somewhere. Shut The F*ck Up drills small, specific, open questions until they replace the big blank ones.
Retire the fix reflex
The moment a teenager describes a problem, the parent reflex is a solution. The solution ends the conversation and teaches them not to bring the next problem. The book’s whole middle is retraining that reflex into a follow-up question.
Do it daily and it becomes the relationship
One better conversation is a nice night. Three hundred sixty-five reps is a different relationship, the kind where they tell you things they tell no one else. That sentence is on the back of the book because it is the point. Related: how to become a better listener, and for the dad side of the same work, Dad The F*ck Up.
Shut The F*ck Up
365 days of closing your mouth and mastering the art of listening. The pause, the questions, the ratio. One rep a day.
What questions get a teenager to open up?
Open, specific, and low-stakes: what was the worst part of today, who was funny today, what would you change about that class. Never why-questions and never anything that sounds like a lead-in to a lecture.
Why does my teenager shut down when I talk?
Usually because talking arrives as fixing. Every sentence that starts with you should teaches them the conversation has a cost. The book trains the pause that removes it.
