MAXX THE F*CK UP

What Is Mewing, and Does It Actually Do Anything?

The short answer: Mewing is resting your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, teeth lightly together, in the hope that years of doing so reshape the jawline. It comes from a fringe orthodontic theory and became one of the biggest teen appearance trends on the internet.

The honest answer on whether it works: proper tongue posture is harmless and mildly good for you; the dramatic jawline transformations are lighting, angles, weight loss and puberty.

What mewing actually is

The technique is simple: whole tongue on the palate, lips closed, breathing through the nose. Advocates claim sustained pressure guides facial bone development. Mainstream orthodontics accepts that tongue posture matters in growing children and finds no good evidence that mewing meaningfully restructures an adult or teenage face. The before-and-afters that sell it are overwhelmingly posture, lighting and leanness.

The harmless part and the harmful part

Nasal breathing and decent tongue posture cost nothing and are fine. The harm starts where the forums escalate: hard mewing with forced pressure, chewing gadgets, and from there the pipeline into bonesmashing and surgery talk aimed at boys who are still growing. The technique is not the danger; the community around it often is. That escalation is exactly why where looksmaxxing crosses the line was written.

What actually changes a jawline

Unhelpfully boring: body-fat percentage, sleep, and finishing puberty. The forums argue about jawlines while every stat they want runs on sleep. A leaner, well-slept version of the same face photographs the way the mewing threads promise, without the tongue exercises taking the credit. The wider, safe version of all this is in what looksmaxxing is and the year-long glow-up.

If your kid is mewing

By itself, relax: it is closer to sitting up straight than to anything alarming, and it will pass. What deserves attention is the accompanying content, because the algorithm that served mewing serves the pipeline behind it next. The vocabulary to listen for is in teen slang for parents.

Does mewing actually change your jawline?

There is no solid evidence it reshapes a face after early childhood. Correct tongue posture is harmless and mildly beneficial; the dramatic transformations online are mostly leanness, lighting, angles and normal growth.

Is mewing safe?

Ordinary mewing, resting the tongue on the palate and nasal breathing, is safe. Forcing pressure, hard mewing, or moving on to chewing gadgets and harder practices is where orthodontists start objecting.
