Milestone Birthday Names by Year: 21st, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th and Beyond
There is no official name for any birthday. What people call the 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th is borrowed from the wedding-anniversary gift list: pearl, ruby, gold, diamond. The rest are nicknames, the big four-oh, over the hill, three score and ten, or borrowed customs like the key to the door at 21 and kanreki at 60. Here is the whole list in one table, where each name actually comes from, and the one thing worth doing with a milestone birthday that no cake covers.
Quick answer: Milestone birthdays are named after the wedding anniversary for the same year: 25th silver, 30th pearl, 40th ruby, 45th sapphire, 50th golden, 60th diamond, 70th platinum, 80th oak. None of these are official; they are borrowed.

Two cautions on the table. First, the gemstone names are anniversary names that migrated to birthdays in the last few decades, mostly through party supply and greeting cards; older relatives may not recognize them. Second, a golden birthday is a different thing entirely: the year your age matches the day of the month you were born, so someone born on the 14th has a golden birthday at 14. The 50th is the golden birthday by borrowing; the 14th is golden by definition.
Why the names are borrowed
Anniversaries got named because a couple, a family and a community all needed a shared vocabulary for marking them, and the gift-list system from silver at 25 to gold at 50 to diamond at 60 was set in the nineteenth and early twentieth century and expanded from there. Birthdays never got the same treatment because nobody needed one: the number is the name. The big three-oh and the big four-oh are the honest folk names, and the gemstones are decoration. Which is fine, as long as nobody tells you a 40th birthday is officially ruby. It is ruby because ruby was available.
What a milestone birthday is actually for
Every decade birthday is the same event underneath the decoration: a ten-year block closing and a new one opening, at an age when it is still cheap to correct course. The useful response is not a bigger party. It is a decade reflection: what the ten years were for, what they cost, what compounded, and what to focus on in the next ten, scored honestly rather than remembered fondly.
