What Does Mog Status Mean? Status Mogging, Explained

Mog status, or a status mog, means outclassing someone on money, position or social pull rather than on looks: the better car, the bigger title, the room that goes quiet when they walk in for reasons that have nothing to do with their face. It is the adult version of the slang. Teenagers run the comparison on height and jawlines; men in their thirties run it on status, and they run it just as compulsively and with the same result, which is that the ladder has no top.

What counts as a status mog

Anything that reads as rank. Income, visibly spent. Title, the job or the company name. Access, who someone knows and who returns their calls. Followers, in the online version. The phrase gets used both ways: he status mogs everyone in that office, and, as a defense, I got face mogged but I status mog him, which is the slang's way of admitting that the comparison found a category it could win in. That defense is the tell. The whole vocabulary is a search for a category to win in.

Why grown men fall for this one

Because it looks like ambition. Chasing a face mog is obviously silly and chasing a status mog can be described as a career, so it goes unexamined for decades. But the comparison is identical: a stranger, a category, a ladder with no top, and a new bigger fish at every rung.
